Verizon, Partners Show the Promise of LTE

, But Verizon has 4G LTE coming soon, and the nation's top wireless carrier spent some time Wednesday afternoon showing off the potential of a much, much faster cellular network.

Not "cell phone network," however. Verizon has shied away from talking about smartphones running on their LTE network, which will roll out to between 25 to 30 cities in 2010 and nationwide by 2013. Rather, the company has been showing off high-bandwidth entertainment, security, healthcare and other applications that make heavy use of LTE's 12-megabit download speeds, which are faster than most wired home Internet connections.

Verizon's demo room did have one phone-like device, a variant of the Samsung Mondi handheld which uses LTE rather than WiMax to connect itself to the Internet. But that device didn't seem to do much that was special.

Far more special was Motorola's black tablet which streamed 1080p high-def video to a big-screen TV, thanks to Nvidia's Tegra chipset. You just can't run video that quality over existing wireless networks, and I saw why when a detail popped up on the big screen - it took 11 megabits/second to transmit the signal, beyond the capacity of today's networks.
