Carpet Car Mats: How To Keep The Floor Secure From Rust And Dust ...

Our dog is a fur machine. He's a rescued German Shepherd/Collie mutt, and is smarter and cuter than any dog has a right to be. I think he's the best dog ever (yes, I'm partial), but I admit, some days I have moments where I wish he was one of those Mexican hairless dogs, or have visions of what he'd look like if we shaved all of his fur off and shrunk him down to 1/2 size. He's a whole lot of dog, with a whole lot of fur!

He is double coated like a Collie, with a big fluffy butt and lots and lots of fur. It even springs up from between his toes. The amount of fur he sheds is amazing, some of the hair growing on him is at least six inches long. His butt is so fluffy, it makes him look twice as wide as he really is. I kid you not, when we have a marathon session of brushing, the pile of leftover fur is larger than a lot of people's dogs! When he gets a bath, he looks so small without his big fluffy coat! I have to chase down the “fur tumbleweeds” on the hardwood floors if I don't vacuum every other day, and we've almost given up on wearing fleece anymore.

We talked to our vet about shaving him once, but he doesn't recommend shaving for breeds with double coats. Besides, it would look funny. He'd look like a lion- with only his fluffy “mane” and tail intact. So, I just have to battle the fur.

I can't tell you how many times I've been in a professional or social setting trying to inconspicuously pick the last few stray hairs off my outfit! My husband will stand at the front door and stick his arms out before he leaves for a “fur check”. It's bad enough that “furred” is now a commonly used word in my household. As in “Oh man, I've been furred”, or “I was going to wear my red jacket, but it's been furred”. But, even if I had to shovel the fur out of the house, it would be well worth it for the love, companionship, and protection he brings us.

Winter weather forecast: higher gas prices, heating oil costs

On Thursday, retail gasoline prices popped to over $2.70 a gallon, the highest level since October 2008, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. At the same time, home heating oil is running 50 cents a gallon higher than last winter at this time, according to the federal Energy Information Administration (EIA). And, on Thursday, crude oil prices hit $82.63 a barrel, a small drop from Wednesday but close to the highest level since October 2008, just as the recession was beginning to hit.

Impact on economic recovery

The higher energy prices will not be helpful to the economy’s recovery since they take money out of consumers’ pockets. Economist Mark Zandi of Moody’s Economy.com says every penny increase in a gallon of gasoline costs consumers $1 billion over a one-year period. With gasoline prices up $1 a gallon in the past year, it has cost consumers an extra $100 billion.

“This is about 1 percent of consumer spending,” says Mr. Zandi. “This by itself does not do the consumer in, but it does not help.”
