Home security is vital for our well being. Simply locking our doors at night is no longer sufficient when it comes to providing a comforting feel of safety as we sleep, or even go to the office. Yet, there are so many types of home security systems on the market that many home owners simply give up trying to decide what type to buy or how much to spend.
Nowadays, video is everything. We can\’t just expect to have an alarm go off as the door or window is pried open, and then have the burglar run scared as he takes off. A loud noise is certainly going to scare someone into thinking twice about robbing your home or your office, but will it catch the bad guy? Probably not.
A professional burglar knows the business. He can disarm most systems and understands about loud alarms that aren\’t hooked up to anything outside the house. He knows that if an alarm goes off, he still has enough time to find grandma\’s pearls, your good silver, and the cash in the freezer – and be long gone before the first police car arrives on the scene.
Some homeowners have been convinced by many alarm companies that silent alarms are the way to go. Wrong! There\’s nothing as useless as allowing some burglar into your home… And giving him five to ten minutes to wipe you out, or worse – to harm you. Having an alarm go off that no one can hear – including the bad guy! – is pointless!
What you need and what the police want is video! They need to see the guy\’s face! If they are lucky they\’ll even see the getaway car and a license plate, and perhaps his buddies who helped.
Video systems, or CCTV systems, can include anywhere from one camera – usually positioned outside over the front entrance – to multiple cameras inside and out. The more cameras, the better chance of not only catching the culprits, but of collecting any other evidence left behind. The best ones have built in motion detectors – these will focus on and move towards people (or dogs, cars, whatever).

Farewell, 2009. Was that a fun year in politics, or what?
Birthers and Blue Dogs and polls, oh my. A new president under fire from the left and right. A Republican Party galvanized by the audacity of no. A gritty and grinding legislative process that makes you pine for the manufacture of sausages. An ex-vice president who makes less sense than your average homeless babbler. And, to top things off, a zealot with murderous underpants.
But '09 was mere foreplay compared with what partisan delights await us in '10. This is an election year in Washington. The Democrats have to defend their House and Senate majorities amid a recession and two wars (three, if you count our covert maneuverings in Yemen). Most important, if Democrats hope to blunt their likely congressional losses, they'll have to frame a positive message on health-care reform -- because, regardless of whether Barack Obama inks a bill into law, this issue will be huge next November.
