SFO to bolster security

SFO already has one of the nation's 40 controversial whole-body imaging machines, and city and airport officials are lobbying for some of the 150 additional machines appropriated by Congress for airports around the nation this year. Newsom said he'd like to see at least one machine at each of the airport's seven security checkpoints, but would be happy to install even more.

In addition, SFO has secured a $5 million grant from the Transportation Security Administration to upgrade the airport's 1,000 security cameras. The money will soon buy new high-definition megapixel cameras, which will capture images in far greater detail and include facial recognition capabilities.

The cameras cover roadways, the perimeter of the airport, baggage systems, terminals, security checkpoints and other areas of the airport. The system is monitored by both the Transportation Security Administration and airport security personnel.

The airport is also investing $3 million of its own money into improving the security system that checks the identification badges of the 17,000 airport employees who have access to nonpublic areas. And the San Francisco Police Department is beefing up its presence at the airport, though the police chief wouldn't say by how much.
