'It was kind of scary for a bit'

KAHULUI - Passengers aboard a Hawaiian Airlines Mainland flight that was disrupted by an unruly flier arrived on Maui more than five hours late Wednesday night, tired and happy to finally be on the Valley Isle.

They had left earlier Wednesday bound for Maui only to return to Portland, Ore. - escorted by two military jets - after a disruptive passenger led the aircraft's pilot to turn back the jetliner. Passengers said they were unaware of the incident until two people were escorted off the aircraft in Portland.

"It was kind of scary for a bit," said Lahaina resident Marsha Bond, who added she was about to "kiss the floor" when the plane touched down at Kahului Airport around 7:30 p.m.

For just a second, Bond said she was frightened enough to think about her grandchildren and her new puppy.

But fellow passenger Oren Herson said he wasn't shaken.

"It was no big deal," he said while waiting for his luggage at Kahului Airport. He called the flight "long."
